Social Confidence Groups

Helping Children Build Social Skills and Confidence.

Our Social Confidence Groups provide a supportive next step for children with Selective Mutism to generalise their communication skills in a safe and structured environment. These sessions are ideal for clients who have reached Level 5 of the 5 Stage Model of Communication and are able to talk directly to the clinician and one or two others, and are ready to expand their social interactions. Sessions can be attended face-to-face, or via telehealth.

What are Social Confidence Groups?

01

Small Group Setting

Groups consists of 4 children, matched by age or shared interests, to create a safe and encouraging environment.

02

Guided Activities

Structured conversational tasks, games, and other activities support the development of social skills and communication.

03

Inclusive Communication Styles

Communication doesn’t have to centre on speaking. Participants can engage using writing, drawing, messaging apps, or verbal communication, depending on their comfort level.

04

Neurodiversity-Affirming

Sessions are strengths-based and encourage participants to explore accommodations others can make to support their communication style.

how can these groups help

Social Confidence Groups aim to do the following:

Help children reduce avoidance and engage more confidently with peers
Support the development of positive peer relationships and a sense of belonging
Help children generalise communication skills with peers into real-world settings
Encourage positive identity development and self-esteem in social interactions
Provide opportunities to set and reflect on personal communication goals

Why Social Confidence Matters

Social confidence plays a key role in a child’s ability to connect with others, participate in everyday activities, and feel safe expressing themselves in the world around them. For children with Selective Mutism, developing confidence in small, supported group settings helps reduce avoidance and supports the generalisation of communication skills beyond one-to-one therapy.

Social Confidence Groups provide children with opportunities to practise communication, build peer relationships, and develop emotional awareness in a way that feels safe, structured, and achievable. Over time, these experiences support confidence, independence, and meaningful participation at school and in the community.

IS YOUR CHILD Ready to BUILD CONFIDENCE IN GROUPS?

Your child's clinician will let you know when they feel your child is ready for the Social Confidence Groups or feel free to ask them if you feel your child is ready.

Bookings are for all sessions within the term, including the parent feedback session. Payment can be made either before or just after sessions. Due to organisational requirements, sessions cannot be cancelled once booked. This is because the full group size is necessary for other children to benefit from the experience and because it is too late to offer the group experience to other families part-way through the term.

Registrations for Term 1 close on 27 January 2026.
