PEER COMMUNICATION INTENSIVE

A 3-hour clinician-led group for children with Selective Mutism who can talk to adults but struggle to talk with peers.

Does your child speak comfortably with adults, but stay silent around other children?

Many children with Selective Mutism learn to speak comfortably with parents, therapists and other trusted adults before they are able to speak with peers.

For many families, this is where progress feels stuck. Their child may want friends, want to join in and want to communicate — but still struggle to get the words out around other children.

Speaking with peers is often one of the most challenging stages of recovery from Selective Mutism.

The Peer Communication Intensive was specifically designed for children who can already speak with adults but are not yet speaking comfortably with other children.

Through structured activities, guided interaction and carefully supported opportunities to communicate, children begin practising verbal communication with peers in a small, supportive group setting.

THIS IS NOT A HOLIDAY CAMP

This is a clinician-led, exposure-based intervention focused on helping children move from non-verbal communication towards verbal communication with peers.

Why This Step Matters

A child may be speaking successfully with adults, but still struggle to:

  • Make and maintain friendships
  • Join group activities
  • Communicate naturally with children their own age
  • Participate confidently in social situations

For many children, peer communication is the bridge between speaking in therapy and speaking more freely in everyday life.

Without targeted opportunities to practise speaking with peers, progress can sometimes stall at this stage.

This intensive provides multiple supported opportunities to communicate with peers within a single structured session.

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM SUITABLE FOR?

This program may be suitable for children who:

✓ Have a diagnosis of Selective Mutism

✓ Speak comfortably at home

✓ Can speak with a therapist or another trusted adult

✓ Are beginning to communicate verbally in treatment

✓ Continue to struggle to speak with peers

This program may not be suitable for children who are not yet communicating verbally with a therapist or who require an initial one-to-one treatment approach.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROGRAM?

Children participate in a series of structured activities designed to support communication and social confidence. Activities may include:

  • Structured introductions
  • Communication-based games and activities
  • Guided opportunities to interact with peers
  • Real-life social situations used to practise communication
  • Gradual exposure to speaking within the group
  • Individualised support where needed

WHAT CHILDREN OFTEN BEGIN TO DO

Many children leave the intensive having:

Spoken words or sentences to another child
Participated verbally within a small group
Responded verbally during activities
Increased their confidence communicating with peers
Experienced success speaking beyond one-to-one settings

Every child progresses at a different pace. The goal of the intensive is to provide supported opportunities for children to take meaningful next steps towards communicating with peers.
