What is the SM Parent Support Group?

The Online Selective Mutism Parent Support Group is guided by Clinical Psychologist Monique Shipp who primarily treats Selective Mutism in Children and Adolescents. The group is designed to help connect parents, grandparents, and caregivers to each other to share their lived experience in supporting their children with Selective Mutism. Parental peer support is linked to measurable improvements in child mental health outcomes. This monthly online group focuses on providing practical Selective Mutism strategies, guidance, and emotional support, helping you build further confidence in supporting your child’s Selective Mutism.

Why Parent Support Matters

Supporting a child with Selective Mutism can feel overwhelming at times. Many parents experience uncertainty, emotional fatigue, or isolation, particularly when progress feels slow or unpredictable.

Research and clinical experience show that when parents feel informed, supported, and confident, children are better able to manage anxiety, build communication skills, and cope with social and school environments. The SM Parent Support Group recognises that supporting parents is a vital part of supporting children.

By connecting with other parents who understand the unique challenges of Selective Mutism, and by learning practical, evidence-based strategies, parents are better equipped to support their child’s emotional wellbeing, communication, and long-term development.
