SELECTIVE MUTISM TREATMENT FOR SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS

Curious about our webinar?

Take a quick look at this preview for a glimpse of Dr Elizabeth Woodcock’s insights and the practical strategies you can expect to learn.

Although children with Selective Mutism are often referred to Speech Pathologists because of their communication difficulties, Selective Mutism is an anxiety disorder rather than a speech disorder. As a result, many Speech Pathologists are unsure whether they should take a leading role in treatment or focus solely on any co-occurring speech and language difficulties while involving a Psychologist.

This practical, evidence-based webinar has been designed specifically for Speech Pathologists working with preschool and primary-aged children with Selective Mutism. You’ll gain greater confidence in understanding your role, knowing when to take the lead, and working collaboratively with families, teachers, and Psychologists to support meaningful communication.

Across this comprehensive 6-hour webinar, you’ll learn practical 5-stage communication model that guides treatment, along with evidence-based strategies such as Sliding In, Stepladders, and school-based intervention techniques. You’ll also explore how to support communication across different settings and adapt treatment for children with additional needs.

In line with the Selective Mutism Clinic’s three-pronged approach, you’ll learn practical strategies to:

  1. Coach classroom teachers to implement effective school-based communication programs and create an environment that supports successful communication.
  2. Work collaboratively with parents to help children manage anxiety and develop communication skill during clinic sessions or via telehealth.
  3. Support families to build children’s confidence communicating in everyday settings beyond school, including community and extracurricular activities.
